Dunn Awarded Sheriff’s Commendation of Outstanding Investigative Work

July 18, 2025 By Contributed Article Leave a Comment

On Thursday, Hamilton County Sheriff Austin Garrett formally presented a Sheriff’s Commendation to Criminal Warrants Detective Marty Dunn in recognition of his exemplary investigative work that led to the apprehension of a theft suspect and recovery of stolen property.

On the afternoon of Wednesday, May 28, 2025, Detective Dunn observed an open gate while patrolling near the former Volunteer Army Ammunition Plant, located in the 4800 block of Hickory Valley Road, near the site of the former HCSO East Sector Building. The property has been the target of repeated unlawful entries since 2024, with ongoing incidents of theft, vandalism, and arson resulting in hundreds of thousands of dollars in property damage.

Acting on his instincts, Detective Dunn entered the facility and noticed fresh tire tracks and the sound of a nearby engine. He quickly located a Nissan pickup truck pulling a trailer loaded with high-voltage wiring, which had been removed from utility poles being stored on the property. Detective Dunn initiated a traffic stop and detained the driver, later identified as Dean Allen Martinez.

Further investigation revealed that Martinez had unlawfully entered the premises by cutting chains and locks on multiple gates. Despite clearly posted “No Trespassing” signage, he admitted to returning to the site with the intent to collect materials for scrap.

Thanks to Detective Dunn’s vigilance, quick thinking, and initiative, a suspect was apprehended and thousands of dollars in stolen materials were recovered.

In recognition of his professionalism, attention to detail, and outstanding dedication to public safety, Detective Dunn was presented with a Certificate of Commendation and the Sheriff’s Challenge Coin by Sheriff Garrett.
