In today’s highly charged political environment one finds one’s self in a particularly odd position if he/she is desiring a fair and equitable contest. Despite the term “non-partisan” it is very difficult to get it to play out that way. Many candidates talk about wanting to “reach out to the other side,” an allusion to “big tent” theory. However, the big tent only exists until one’s party affiliation is discovered. Then, the big tent closes it’s doors and the clowns return to their trailers.

There exists a deep divide in our political landscape today rather than a “big tent.” Rather than voters digging into the heart of a candidate, seeing what their conduct in life is about; measuring their experience in work success and community involvement; knowledge of how government functions, they get behind their party lines and push “their candidate” disregarding  any notion that might lead to a devoted public servant truly interested in working for the good of the entire community.

Staying behind party lines, a candidate fails to see the true needs of the community. They disconnect with the economic progress, public safety through fire and police protection, protection of property owners’ rights and maintaining the overall quality of life of the citizenry. A dedicated public servant will be reading, listening to constituents (regardless of party affiliation), learning from all other elected servants and government employees.

As a citizen and voter living in East Ridge, I implore you to do your own research. Take a close look at the candidates. Most of all get out on November 3 and exercise your constitutional right. VOTE!
