Minutes from June 6 ER Alumni & Supporters Association Meeting

  1. Bobby Hudgens called for a motion to start the Alumni meeting which was made and seconded.
  2. Treasurer’s Report was read and accepted with no objections (Robert Stahl really does a great job on the account with not much thanks).
  3. Coach Tim James provided an update regarding the athletic structures at East Ridge High School – the county will provide approximately $300,000 to build bleachers and a press box. The needs of the school are dressing rooms, concession stand, restrooms and field house, which will not be provided by county funds.
  4. Bobby Hudgens made the following announcements concerning the Pioneer Classic golf tourney on August 5th:

 

  • VW has now confirmed that they will donate a vehicle for the hole-in-one portion
  • Another dealership has committed a second vehicle for the hole-in-one but it has not yet been confirmed
  • Several teams have registered and they’re still coming in (need 130 players total)
  • More corporations will be visited in the next days for corporate sponsorship
  • Coca Cola has offered to donate drinks
  • It was discussed and agreed that mulligans can be purchased at $10.00 each and ticket stubs will be placed in a hat for a door prize drawing
  • Donations are being sought for the golf tourney for snacks and goodie bags: Moon Pies, breakfast, peanut butter crackers, snack bars, chips, lunch donation, golf items, door prizes for drawings, etc.
  • Volunteers are needed for registration tables, drink carts, course hosts/hostesses

 

  1. Bill Shipley created a fantastic brochure on the Pioneer Classic for distribution – he is absolutely amazing at what he does J
  1. The following announcements were made for volunteers for the August 5th Reunion Weekend party at Renaissance Center and August 6th party at the Chattanooga Trade and Convention Center:

 

  • Bobby Hudgens will contact the band “No Big Deal” about playing at the Friday night event
  • Allstar Enterprises (http://www.allstarenterprises.biz) is a company that provides money-making auction items on consignment and will be contacted about the August 5th silent auction and live auction which will be hosted by Ken Sons and Les McCurdy
  • Volunteers are research food donation options with local area restaurants for Friday night’s meal
  • Volunteers were encouraged to begin searching for decorations and the best deals on orange and white table cloths, balloons, etc.
  • A line-up of event volunteers was discussed concerning registration, set-up, etc.
  • The comedy show with Les McCurdy, Ken Sons and Jim Brick has been confirmed for Saturday night
  • A DJ will be researched and confirmed prior to the next meeting

 

  1. Bill Shipley created an entire brochure for the Reunion Weekend events which was top-notch and looked fantastic. This will be distributed as an invitation and marketing tool for donors.
  1. It was announced that the Association needs to send a letter to Tim Boyd and David Testerman for their work on behalf of East Ridge as well as to Chuck Fleischmann for his help in getting the 501(c)3 certification finalized.
  2. Jimmy Starling requested on behalf of the East Ridge Hall of Fame Association that the Alumni & Supporters Association make a $1,000 donation to the HOF for its next induction. The idea was discussed and it was decided to present this request to the Board and table it until the next meeting.
  3. Due to the Fourth of July holiday, the next meeting of the Association will be held on Monday, June 27, at 7:00 p.m. at the ERHS Library.
  4. A motion was made and seconded to adjourn the meeting.

Dick Cook has lived in East Ridge since the Kennedy Administration when his parents bought a house on Marietta Street. Dick graduated from ERHS in 1976 before going on to the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga where he studied Political Science. Dick worked for the Chattanooga Free-Press and the Chattanooga Times Free Press for 22 years. Free-Press Sports Editor Roy Exum plucked him out of production in 1989 and gave him a job as a sports reporter. Dick covered everything from prep sports to the whitewater events on the Ocoee River for the 1996 Olympics. When Chattanooga's two paper's merged, he became the Crime Reporter covering both the Chattanooga Police and Fire Departments. He was among reporters who were honored by the Associated Press for the TFP's coverage of the 2002 fog-shrouded crash on I-75 in Catoosa County, Dick and his wife, Cathy, live on Marlboro Avenue where they are seen frequently chasing around their three grandsons.
