ERHS Football Banquet

The East Ridge High School football team recently held its banquet to recognize superlative players.

In a press release, coach Tim James said congratulations are in order for the following football players: Alonzo Russell was named the Region 2/4A Offensive Player of the Year in addition to being named to the Chattanooga Times-Free Press Best of Preps All Star Team.

Several of his teammates were also named to the All-Region Team; they are Tra Jett, Solomon Taylor, Nico Johnikin, Jalen Boykin, Keanu Johnson and Caleb Serrato.

“If you get a chance to congratulate these fine young men please do,” James said.

Dino Sabic was awarded the highest GPA Award. James said there are now over 20 players who have a 3.0 or higher GPA.

Awards given at our recent banquet are as follows:

Brandon Burlsworth Character Award – Jordan Hill

Scout Team Players of the Year – Jordan Hill and Dejaun Norris

Coaches Award – Alonzo Russell

Jim Starling Love of the Game Award – Solomon Taylor

Ed Wooham Community Service Award – Drew Goodwin

Jim Steele Scrap Iron Award – Kenau Johnson

Underclassman Award – Jalen Boykin

Mack Franklin True Grit Award _ Kenyatta Gustus

Stump Martin Big Guy Award – Joey Boles

The Raymond James True Pioneer Award _ Tra Jett

Dick Cook has lived in East Ridge since the Kennedy Administration when his parents bought a house on Marietta Street. Dick graduated from ERHS in 1976 before going on to the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga where he studied Political Science. Dick worked for the Chattanooga Free-Press and the Chattanooga Times Free Press for 22 years. Free-Press Sports Editor Roy Exum plucked him out of production in 1989 and gave him a job as a sports reporter. Dick covered everything from prep sports to the whitewater events on the Ocoee River for the 1996 Olympics. When Chattanooga's two paper's merged, he became the Crime Reporter covering both the Chattanooga Police and Fire Departments. He was among reporters who were honored by the Associated Press for the TFP's coverage of the 2002 fog-shrouded crash on I-75 in Catoosa County, Dick and his wife, Cathy, live on Marlboro Avenue where they are seen frequently chasing around their three grandsons.
