UPDATED: Hamilton County Schools Closing Early

December 8, 2017 By Dick Cook and Contributed Article 0 Comments

Editor’s Note: OLPH School will be dismissing its students at 1 p.m.

Dismissal for schools in Hamilton County will be two hours earlier than normal today due to possible snow in the area.  The mountain and higher elevation sections of the county are the biggest concerns for this afternoon.

“We have a possibility of temperatures dropping below freezing in the mountains and higher elevations, so we want to make sure we can get buses finished with routes before any problems may arise this afternoon,” stated Dr. Bryan Johnson, superintendent of Hamilton County Schools. “This is just a precaution to make sure we get our children home safely today.”

Weather patterns have shifted in the last few hours and due to the unpredictable situation at this time, the system will close early to make sure we can get all children home. The weather system shifted dramatically overnight blanketing north Georgia with snow and the weather system has moved much closer to the Chattanooga area than expected.

All dismissal activities will take place two hours earlier than normal. If your school dismisses at 3 p.m., the dismissal would take place at 1 p.m. today. All other dismissal activities from car rider pick-up to bus routes will be two hours earlier than normal today.

Afterschool Childcare and after-school activities update

With schools closing early today due to the possibility of snow in the area, afterschool childcare will be closed today. Due to the unpredictable nature of the weather system in the area today, the decision regarding afterschool activities, sports practices, and sports events will be determined by 3 p.m. this afternoon. Additional information will be provided after 3 p.m. today.
