Police Briefs Feb. 6

February 6, 2019 By Dick Cook 0 Comments

Recently, an Hispanic woman reported to police that she had been the victim of a phone scam.

According to a police report, late last month the victim told officers that she received a phone call from a person by the name of “Mark.” The suspect spoke to the woman in fluent Spanish telling her that since she had a wonderful record of paying her bills on time, she was qualified for the purchase of a new iPhone 10 at a special discounted price.

The report states the victim was instructed to send $370 to an address in Florida via money order. The victim told police that after she accepted the offer “Mark” called her for five consecutive days asking her if she had sent the money.

According to the report, the initial call came from a number out of Russia. The calls checking on the money order originated from a Florida number.

Late last month, the victim received her phone; not the promised iPhone but an android phone valued at $30. The package came via FedEx from an address in Florida.

The victim told police that the voice of the man on all the calls sounded the same. According to the report, the victim speaks little English, and police told her to spread the word of this scam among the city’s Hispanic community.

_ 1503 McDonald Rd.: Police were called to the Waverly motel at this address on Tuesday night in regard to a theft. According to a department “pass along” report, officers spoke with a woman who witnessed Patrick R. Hayes steal a black 1995 Ford Ranger from the motel. The report does not state from where the vehicle was stolen. Police found the vehicle on the lot of the motel and Hayes was arrested. Hayes, 27, of an Igou Gap Road address, was booked into the Hamilton County Jail on a single charge of Theft of Property.

_ 1503 McDonald Rd.: According to another entry on the “pass along” report, while police were dealing with a theft report at the Waverly motel, a man approached officers saying that he had been robbed. The alleged victim told police that an unknown black male that goes by the name of “Lil’ Man,” forcefully took his bottle of Clonazepam and punched the victim in the face several times. The victim told police that Patrick Hayes, who had just been taken into custody for theft, witnessed the robbery. Investigators were notified, the report states.

_ 5810 Welworth: Police were called to the address early Wednesday morning in regard to an auto burglary. According to a pass along report, Derek Maust was taken into custody after he was found breaking into an unoccupied vehicle at this location. Maust had to be transported directly to the Hamilton County Jail due to “non-compliant behavior.” According to jail booking reports, the 46-year-old Maust gave his address as the Waverly motel. He was charged with Auto Burglary and is being held on a $7,500 bond.

_ 1410 N. Mack Smith Rd.: Police were called to the Budgetel, Tuesday night, in regard to an unconscious party. According to a department pass along report, security officers at the motel found a male unresponsive and naked inside his room with the door wide open. The man was taken by EMS to Erlanger Hospital.
