Red Wolves Prevail over Crosstown Club CFC

April 3, 2025 By Contributed Article 0 Comments

The Red Wolves edged Chattanooga Football Club, 5-4, Wednesday evening at Finley Stadium in the second round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.

Regulation ended in a 1-1 tie, which stood after a scoreless extra 30 minutes. Penalty kicks came next, with Owen Green making the winning PK on the final attempt.

Finley was jammed with 12,131 fans, watching the first showdown between the two teams. Fans warmed up for the match by tailgating, some arriving six hours before the scheduled start time. The attendance at Finley rivaled the record for a second-round Open Cup match of 12,790 held by FC Cincinnati in Nippert Stadium.

Omar Hernandez, a former Dalton High star, scored first for the Red Wolves. His 25-yard free kick from the top of the box found the back right corner of the goal.

CFC answered with a free kick courtesy of Daniel Mangarov from the top right side of the box.

The Red Wolves will host South Georgia Tormenta FC on Saturday at CHI Memorial Stadium in its home opener. Game time is slated for 7 p.m. For tickets click here
