Resident Fires Shots at Burglar

March 14, 2017 By Dick Cook 3 Comments

full_579A resident of a home on South Seminole fired multiple shots at a burglar who had broken into his house early Tuesday morning.

According to a police report, police responded to the home in the 600 block of South Seminole Drive at 2:15 a.m. on a “burglary in progress” call. When police arrived they spoke with a man who said he was asleep when he heard “loud banging” coming from the back of his house. The man said at first that he thought he was dreaming until he heard more sounds.

The man told officers that he grabbed his Smith & Wesson 9 mm pistol and made his way out of his bedroom into the hallway of his home. The report states that the man heard two more bangs and “then his back door came open.” The man told officers he crouched down in the hallway and looked around the corner into the kitchen and saw a six-foot tall man in his 20s wearing a light gray hoodie and blue jeans inside his house. According to the victim, the burglar was holding a pistol in his right hand.

The report states that the victim then fired two shots in the direction of the suspect. Subsequently, the victim told officers, he fired three more rounds at the man. The suspect took off out the back of the house into the backyard. Once the suspect had fled, the victim said he heard what sounded like another gun shot.

The report states that investigators spoke with several neighbors who reported hearing gun shots. One of the neighbors told police that after hearing the shots, he grabbed his gun and went outside to see what had happened. The witness told officers that he saw a dark-colored Mini Cooper speeding off from the street. The neighbor then went to check on the victim of the burglary. The neighbor reported to police that the fence in his backyard had been broken, possibly by the suspect jumping over it.

Investigators spoke with another neighbor who reported hearing six gun shots. This witness told police that he ran outside and saw a black Mini Cooper spin its tires out at the stop sign at Brockhaven and S. Seminole Drive. The man told police that the vehicle turned left on Gleason Drive and stopped in front of a duplex on the street for at least 10 seconds before continuing down the road.

The report states that the victim of the burglary told investigators that his house had been broken into on March 1, too. The reports states that the investigation is continuing.
