Flags fly at half-staff in front of East Ridge City Hall on Thursday.

With the tragic murders of five military heroes and the injury of others on July 16, 2015, much sadness and disbelief has been brought to our city, our state, our country and the world. Families of military personnel have to give up loved ones on a daily basis.

What makes this different?

These brave servants of the United States of America were sought out and ambushed on our own soil! Not in an official war zone, not in a military conflict, not patrolling the streets and mountains of a foreign country. No, they were here in America! Working their assigned posts next to businesses and interacting with American citizens.

Every loss of life and injury is devastating and some question why this event has gotten so much attention. Other soldiers, marines, sailors have died and many gone unrecognized except for their immediate family and friends. Their heartache was no less than on July 16 in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Let us all remember all the military men and women and their families for the sacrifices that have been made not only for our safety and freedom, but the sacrifices that have been made throughout the world. Let’s honor these brave Americans by being respectful, patriotic and caring or each other.

Why are our military personnel not armed on federal property in the United States? Why was the flag at the White House not lowered immediately? Why? Why? Why? A lot of questions have been asked. A lot of harsh comments have been made. A lot of blame has been placed. A lot of anger and fear has been stirred within peoples’ hearts. Does any of this serve to honor our country or our fallen heroes? I think the answer to that is no.

Take note of the actions and attitudes of our military men and women. They walk with pride! They speak with humility! Their mission is to serve and protect! They are respectful to all! They are family, one to another! They are watchful, diligent and continue to train to be prepared for what comes! Let us all honor their lives and their deaths by showing those same goals, character and dedication within our own lives on a daily basis.

Let us hold our heads high, hold the American Flag with pride, dignity and not only embrace our heritage and freedoms, but live in a manner that shows we are Proud, we are Strong, we are Free, WE ARE AMERICA!!

Rest in Peace and thank you to those lost on July 16, 2015 and all those who have gone before, so that I have the freedom to speak my opinions without fear!! I am FREE!! I am an AMERICAN and ever so grateful!!
