Catholic Baseball swept the best of three games against Grace Academy on Thursday to win its first-ever Independent School Conference Championship in middle school baseball.
Catholic, which finished a perfect 6-0 in conference play, blanked Grace, 13-0, in game one, then turned around and clinched the title with an 8-2 win.
In game one, Sib Evans and Myles Pruitt scored in the first inning, and Catholic never looked back. Catholic scored five runs on as many hits in the third inning, which included a Myles Pruitt double.
Noah Winland was Catholic’s starter in game one. He gave up four hits over four innings, striking out five and walking three.
Liam Zarzour was the starter for Grace Academy. He gave up three hits and seven runs (six earned) over one and two-thirds innings, striking out none and walking six. Zarzour, however, supplied some offense as well, going two-for-two at the plate.
In the 8-2 win in game two, Pruitt went three-for-three at the plate, including a double in the second inning. Sib Evans’ RBI single in the first set the tone of the game for Catholic.
Catholic piled up 10 hits in the game.
Holder Donnelly gave Catholic three solid innings on the mound. He struck out four and walked three, allowing a single un-earned run. Cooper Grant pitched one and two-thirds of scoreless baseball in relief. He gave up one hit, struck out two, and walked two batters.
Grace’s starter Ethan Hughes had a rough outing, giving up nine hits that produced seven runs.
