Police were called to a house in the 5400 block of Marion Avenue Sunday on a reported home invasion.

According to an affidavit of complaint, when officers arrived they spoke with a witness who told them that the homeowner and the intruder were in the backyard fighting. An officer spoke with the female victim who said she was asleep when she heard glass breaking. She then heard the rear door to the residence being shattered and torn from the frame.

The victim told police that she saw the suspect, identified as 32-year old Martin Hobart Cofer of an Oakdale Avenue address, standing at the rear door with a crowbar in his hands. 

A witness, the report states, said that he saw Cofer hit a male party in the house three times in the stomach with the crowbar. That man, the report states, told officers that the male party being assaulted was able to jump on Cofer’s back during the scuffle to keep Cofer from continuing the alleged assault. 

The report states that all parties in the house were checked by emergency medical workers.

Cofer was arrested and charged with Aggravated Burglary, Aggravated Assault and Vandalism over $500. 

It is unclear when he may appear in East Ridge Municipal Court.

_ A Rossville man was arrested on assault charges after confronting his estranged wife at a playground over a child custody issue.

According to an affidavit of complaint, police were dispatched to the Pioneer Frontier Playground on a disturbance with a weapon call Sunday at 2:33 p.m.. When an officer arrived he spoke with the female complainant who said that she and her two small children were at the park when her estranged husband, 22-year old Brandon Summers, texted her demanding to know where the children were. The woman explained that she and Summers were separated and they had a verbal agreement concerning visitation.

The woman told the officer that Summers called her on the phone while she was at the park and demanded that she bring the children to him, although the children weren’t due back until 5 p.m.. Summers, the report states, came to the park on his Honda motorcycle. He went to his wife and attempted to take a one-year old child from her arms. 

The report states that two juveniles saw the struggle and went to the woman’s aid, asking Summers to stop pulling the little girl. According to the report, the female victim told police that when the juveniles approached Summers put his hand on his hip and she announced out loud, “he has a gun.” The two boys backed off out of fear of the man pulling a weapon.

The woman told officers that once police had been called, Summers went back to his motorcycle and put the gun there. The report states that officers could see a Glock .45 under the bike’s seat. It was secured and placed into property and evidence.

The report states that after having been informed of his rights, Summers told police that he was in possession of the gun when he arrived at the park. He also told officers that when the gun was on his person it was not secured in a holster. The report states that Summers provided police with a Georgia Weapons Carry License, which was also placed into property and evidence.

Summers, of a Peachtree Street address in Rossville, was charged with Simple Domestic Assault and two counts of Aggravated Assault.
