TBI Investigating In-Custody Death at Jail

August 11, 2026 By Contributed Article Leave a Comment

On the evening of August 10, Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office Corrections personnel were notified of an inmate experiencing a medical emergency.

HCSO Corrections Deputies and contract medical personnel administered medical aid to the inmate identified as Colin Shannon, including administering Narcan and CPR while waiting on the arrival of EMS. Shannon was transported to a local hospital by Hamilton County Emergency Medical Service (HCEMS), where he was sadly pronounced deceased.

This is the first in-custody death to occur at the Hamilton County Jail and Detention Center this year.

The District Attorney was notified, and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) responded to conduct a full investigation. Once the investigation is complete, all findings will be turned over to the District Attorney’s Office for review.

Shannon was being housed at the jail for Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Schedule II Drug violations, and Driving on a Revoked License.

The HCSO asks that you keep Mr. Shannon’s family and loved ones in your thoughts during this difficult time.
