Tuesday, the voters of East Ridge made their decision. Although the outcome isn’t what I had hoped for, I respect the democratic process and congratulate the winner.
I want to sincerely thank everyone who supported me, encouraged me, stood beside me, volunteered, shared a kind word, displayed a sign, or took the time to cast a vote in my name. Your support has meant more to me than I can put into words.
However, I would be dishonest if I didn’t acknowledge the difficult side of this campaign.
Over the course of this election, I experienced things that went far beyond a disagreement over qualifications or a difference of opinion about how an office should operate. Rumors, personal attacks, public comments, and statements about my character and my work were circulated in ways that were deeply hurtful.
I was particularly disappointed to see individuals in positions of public trust become involved in personal attacks rather than keeping the discussion focused on the responsibilities of the office and the needs of our community.
I can accept losing an election. What is harder to accept is watching years of dedication and public service reduced to rumors, accusations, and personal attacks.
To those who participated in spreading statements about me, I hope you understand that words carry consequences. Public service should come with accountability, professionalism, and respect, even when we disagree.
I will not spend my final words in this position attacking anyone. I know the work I have done, the challenges I have overcome, and the commitment I have given this community. No election result can erase those things.
Serving as East Ridge City Court Clerk has been one of the greatest honors of my life. For the past 12 years, I’ve had the privilege of serving this community, working alongside dedicated employees, helping residents navigate difficult situations, and being part of a court system that plays an important role in our city.
This position was never just a job to me. It was a responsibility I took seriously, a career I poured myself into, and an opportunity to make a difference. I am proud of the work we’ve accomplished, the improvements we’ve made, and the challenges we’ve overcome.
I also hope there is a true understanding of what the East Ridge City Court Clerk’s office entails. This position is so much more than record keeping, answering phones, or providing customer service. It is a working role within the judicial system that requires knowledge of court procedures, legal processes, financial responsibilities, courtroom operations, and the countless situations that arise every day.
There is a tremendous difference between managing an office and understanding how to operate within a courtroom. The responsibilities don’t disappear when the courtroom gets busy, and the consequences of mistakes can reach far beyond the walls of that office.
These responsibilities require substantial hands-on experience, practical knowledge, and a thorough understanding of court operations. The level of experience necessary to effectively manage the daily functions of a court clerk’s office cannot be acquired overnight or through a brief training period alone. It is developed over time through direct involvement in courtroom proceedings, familiarity with legal procedures, and the ability to navigate the complexities of the judicial system. I sincerely hope the next administration recognizes the significance of this role and the responsibility it carries to the people of East Ridge.
I wish the next administration well, because ultimately, the court and the people it serves should always come first.
To those who believed in me, defended me, encouraged me, and stood beside me throughout this campaign: thank you. I will never forget it.
I may be leaving this position, but I will never apologize for the dedication, hard work, and heart I put into serving this community.
With a grateful heart,
_ Patricia Cassidy
